Brighten up a late St. Petersburg autumn with passionate tango? "Is that possible?" you might think. "Yes!" replies the Theatre of Musical Comedy. On November 28, 29, and 30, the main stage will host "Tango of Love," a production directed by the renowned Argentine dancer and choreographer Daniel Lapadula. A port city, a velvety night, the rustle of the surf... A couple moves swiftly in a passionate embrace, sometimes drawing closer, sometimes separating. Suddenly, the dancers freeze, and the breath of a bandoneon can be heard in the thick, spicy air. It alternately weeps and whispers, telling its stories of love between a man and a woman—stories that were not destined to end happily... In 2006, the Theatre of Musical Comedy added the vocal and dance performance "Dreams of Tango" to its repertoire. Riding the wave of true tango mania sweeping the world, outstanding tango dancer and choreographer Daniel Lapadula captured the hearts of Russian audiences, unlocking them with the magical key of the famous Argentine dance. To achieve this, he needed several dancers, vocalists, an ensemble of musicians, and the incredible energy concentrated in tango. In his new show, "Tango of Love," at the St. Petersburg Theater, Lapadula, who has dedicated his life to this dance, will share everything he knows about tango—from its origins in the 1920s, when its rhythms and melodies began to conquer the dance floors of Buenos Aires, to modern interpretations that reflect the spirit of the 21st century. "Libertango" and "Por una cabeza," "Milonga sentimental" and "Oblivion," Carlos Gardel and Astor Piazzolla—for many tango fans today, these titles and names sound like a password to the world of music and dance. Famous compositions and composers, dancers and vocalists who have become icons of style, will appear in the theater's new production in standalone numbers, each a story revealing a diversity of emotions and characters through movement and music. The passion and irresistible attraction of vocal and dance compositions—the essence of tango—is in the hands of the ensemble, led by Honored Artist of Russia Andrei Alekseev. Artist Irina Dolgova will recreate the flavor of the port of Buenos Aires, the La Boca patio, and its inhabitants on stage. A special casting call was held for dancers who will work with practicing Argentine tango performers. The performance will feature leading soloists and ballet dancers from the Theatre of Musical Comedy. |
