On September 17, 1929, the Musical Comedy Theatre began its history with the play "The bondmaid" by N. Strelnikov. The second light genre theatre in the country, officially accepted into the family of state cultural institutions of the young country, turned out to be incredibly resilient and, having overcome many trials, today remains one of the most beloved theatres of St. Petersburg. During the Great Patriotic War, it was called "an island of joy", later - a laboratory of Soviet operetta, and even later - the cradle of Russian musicals... One way or another, for ninety-five years, remaining faithful to the operetta genre, discovering new names - composers, playwrights, directors and actors, trying their hand at new material, experimenting, getting carried away, and captivating the audience, the Musical Comedy Theatre has always kept up with the times. Over the past decades, more than seventy world premieres of works by Russian and foreign authors have taken place on its stage. A significant part of them entered the golden fund of the Russian musical theater.
When compiling the program of the anniversary concert, the theater decided to focus on important milestones in the history of their hometown, which are closely intertwined with the history of the company. Always finding themselves at the epicenter of events when a sharp joke, a cheerful word and beautiful music could be vital for the audience, the theater's artists and musicians know what it means to be here and now. And therefore, the theater decided to dedicate its anniversary evening to their hometown, which survived unprecedented trials during the Great Patriotic War and became an example of courage and fortitude for many years.
